The environmental health and hygiene of Internally Displaced Persons in Area 1 and New Kuchingoro IDP Camps has been a major concern, which called for an intervention. Life Builders Initiative, a non-profit organization whose areas of intervention embrace Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), teamed up with the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria to implement a 2-day Sanitation and Cleaning exercise at the two IDP Camps. The Sanitation exercise, which took place on the 29th & 30th April, 2016 at Area 1 & New Kuchingoro IDP Camps respectively, had an impressive turn out. Children of School Without Walls, a school pioneered and run by Life Builders Initiative for internally displaced and out-of-school Children at the two IDP camps and their environs, turned out in their huge numbers with men and women to sweep and clear refuse dumps around the camp premises.
The delegates of the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria delivered sensitization lectures on Personal, Household and Environmental Hygiene to the participants during the sanitation exercise.
Some of the key take-homes for all the participants include; defecating in a hygienic manner where there is no toilet, and washing of hands with soap and water after every defecation. Emphasis was also laid on cultivating personal hygiene by bathing at least twice daily and brushing of teeth in the morning and in the evening.
