Life Builders Initiative for Education and Societal Integration (LBI) is a non-profit civil society organization based in Abuja, with the primary goal of improving the lives of the poor, vulnerable and internally-displaced persons, regardless of their sex, age, religion, and race.
One of our thematic areas is Societal Integration, which is an important tool for the development of our society and the younger generation at large. One way to achieve Societal Integration is through respect of the culture of others, we believe there is beauty in our diversity and for a peaceful society, we should all respect each other’s culture and differences, which is why we encourage the creative expression of various culture in form of dances, song presentation or dramas in all our social activities.
Culture is a complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, customs and any other capabilities acquired by man as a member of the society. “It is the sum total of a given society’s way of life molded and shaped by prevailing circumstances and environment” (Brown, 1990) Culture, also, as we all know, simply refers to the way of life of a people, including their customs, traditions, ideas, art, values and language. It is worthy of note that the importance of culture in a plural society need not be over emphasized.
Culture is very important not only because it is a medium through which people communicate, relate and interact but also because it plays a major role in knowledge transmission. Culture is considered here as a very important element of any given society as it helps to integrate a people at all sphere of life.
Asides the regular exciting representations of culture at our various social activities, the 23rd of March 2017, was set aside for the pupils of School Without Walls for a Cultural Day, where the children shared love, danced and promoted their various cultures. The pupils had fun and were encouraged not to discriminate other religions, tribes, and cultures but rather respect and embrace other cultures as we are Global Citizens in a Global Village.
