Thematic Area Focus 4 - Medical Services, Life Builders Initiative for Education and Societal Integration

FOCUS 4: MEDICAL SERVICES

This focus entails provision of essential medical services to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) via the Mobile Clinic and School Clinic Projects. None of the IDP camps in Abuja has a health facility and all are located far away from government hospitals and PHC facilities; where private health facilities are available, IDPs cannot afford to pay for their services.
In many of these camps there are many pregnant women who have not attended antenatal care and are likely to deliver without any supervision. The poor sanitary conditions in these camps make disease outbreaks a regular occurrence. The closest help IDPs have received is through medical outreach programs organized by sympathetic Nigerians usually as part of a day IDP camp visitation program.

What We Set Out To Achieve

School Clinic- Establish a health post (using a porta-cabin) in each camp with close link to secondary and tertiary health facility for referral purpose.
Mobile Clinic- Mobile clinics with regular (2-3 visits per week) to each camp will also be a welcome step. This entails the recruitment of health professionals in motor vans who go round the IDP communities to provide medical services to the people.
Open Day/Medical Outreach- This is a medical outreach that holds every quarter at the School Without Wall sites in each of the IDP camps. During this outreach, the general outreach public and friends of Life Builders Initiative are invited to visit the camp. Some of the direct results of the past outreach held include:
Procure and deploy 2 ambulances for emergencies plus one 14-18 seater Bus for referral as well as clinic visits.

Opportunities for Partnership

  • We estimate that each health post (set-up and maintenance x 1yr) will cost N2million, for a total of N10million for 5 camps.
  • We estimate that a mobile clinic (purchase and maintenance x 1yr) will cost N7million x 2 vans for a total of N14million.
  • We estimate an ambulance will cost N5million x 2 ambulances for a total of N10million
  • We estimate one 14-16 seaters bus will cost N3.5million.
